Free Winchell Hat Pattern

I am so excited to offer this revamped version of one of my favorite designs the “Winchell Hat!” This hat has features panels of a custom stretchy cable which give the hat to have the perfect amount of style and practicality! I hope you enjoy it!

Materials

100 -200 yards of worsted weight yarn.

Recommended Yarn:

US 6 / 4mm circular needles

Notions

Stitch Marker

Cable Needle

Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations

BOR: Beginning of round.

CDD: Center Double Decrease

CF2Y: Slip 1 stitch to cable needle, hold in the front. Knit one from the left needle, yarn over, knit one from the cable needle. 

CB2Y: Slip 1 stitch to cable needle, hold in the back. Knit one from the left needle, yarn over, knit one from the cable needle. 

k: Knit.

k2tog: Knit 2 stitches together. 

rep: Repeat.

ssk: Slip one stitch as if to knit, slip another as if to knit, Knit those stitches together. (One stitch is decreased)

st(s): Stitch(es).

YO: Yarn over. 

W2 (wrap 2): Holding the yarn in the back, slip 2 stitches as if to purl, move the yarn to the front, slip the 2 slipped stitches back to the left needle (the yarn should be in between the stitches on the left needle and the 2 stitches added back to the needle). Move the yarn to the front, wrapping the 2 stitches. Knit the 2 stitches.

This pattern is a pretty simple pattern that features a wrapped stitch ribbing and panels of cables traveling throughout the hat. Please note that there are some unique stitches used in this pattern! Make sure to pay attention to the abbreviation section… Don’t let this scare you though! It is a very simple stitch pattern!

Sizing

One size fits most adults 20”-23” head circumference.

10” in length.

Body

Cast on 96 sts. Join to knit in the round, making sure to not twist sts. Place a BOR marker and slip it at the beginning of each round.

Brim

Note: If you do not want to work the “W2” then just work a

simple 2x2 ribbing for 15-16 rounds. 

Rounds 1-4: *K2, p2; rep from * around.

Round 5: *W2, p2, k2, p2; rep from * around. 

Rounds 6-9: *K2, p2; rep from * around. 

Round 10: *K2, p2, W2, p2; rep from * around. 

Rounds 11-14: *K2, p2; rep from * around. 

Round 15: *W2, p2, k2, p2; rep from * around. 

Hat Body

Round 1: *K2, p2, CF2Y, p2tog, CB2Y, p2; rep from * around.

Round 2: *K2, p2 k7, p2; rep from  * around.

Round 3: *K2, p2, ssk, yo, CDD, yo, K2tog, p2; rep from * around. 

Round 4: *K2, p2, K5, p2; rep from * around. 

Round 5: *K2, p2, CF2Y, k1, CB2Y, p2; rep from * around. 

Repeat Rounds 2-5 until the piece measures approximately 8.5” (21.6 cm) ending on Round 4. 

Decreasing

Round 1: *K2, p2tog, CF2Y, k1, CB2Y, p2tog; rep from * around. 

Round 2: *K2, p1, k7, p1; rep from * around. 

Round 3: *K2tog, p1, ssk, yo, CDD, yo, k2tog, p1; repeat from * around. 

Round 4: *K1, p1, k 5, p1; rep from * around.

Round 5: *K1, p1, CF2Y, k1, CB2Y, p1; rep from * around. 

Round 6: *K1, p1, k7, p1*, rep from * around until there is one stitch left in the row, move the starting marker to before the last stitch. (This moves the start of the row one stitch to the right.) Round 7:  *CDD, SSK, YO, CDD, YO, K2TOG; rep from * around. 

Round 8: Knit around. 

Round 9: Knit around until there is one stitch left in the row, move the starting marker to before the last stitch. (This moves the start of the row one stitch to the right.) 

Round 10: *CDD, k3, CDD; rep from * around. 

Round 11: Knit around. 

Round 12: Same as Round 9

Round 13: *CDD, k1, CDD; rep from * around. 

Rounds 14-16: Sm, knit around. 


Break yarn leaving around a 6” (15.2 cm) tail. Using the tapestry needle thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top of the crown.
